This course was developed to address the issue of cancer patients presenting to the ER with pending/diagnosed oncologic emergencies. This course includes: a) basic background information on cancer including cell biology, lab values, carcinogenesis and treatment modalities, drawn from the Foundations of Oncology Nursing Practice course, and b) 9 common oncologic emergencies that present in the ER. Case studies for each emergency, focusing on the practice implications for ER nurses, will be presented to consolidate learning through application. This course is optimized for ER nurses but other nurses and regulated health care professionals may be interested.
