Facilitator(s):

Donalda MacDonald and Margaret Forbes. Course Authors – Donalda MacDonald and Inara Karrei.

This course is an update of the cancer disease sites building on the information in the Foundations of Oncology Nursing Practice (FOND) course, Cancer Care Basics or the Provincial Standardized Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Course.

The liver is a common site of cancer metastases, though primary liver cancer is relatively uncommon in Canada. The incidence rate of liver cancer has been increasing for the past 30 years in Canada, likely due to increasing rates of chronic hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV) infection and increasing rates of heavy alcohol consumption, diabetes, and obesity. This course will introduce you to primary liver cancer epidemiology, pathology, diagnosis, and treatment, covering the foundational knowledge you need to provide nursing care to patients with primary liver cancer and their families.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the normal anatomy and physiology of the liver
  • Identify risk factors for primary liver cancer development
  • Understand the pathophysiology of primary liver cancer
  • Describe the diagnosis pathway and staging for primary liver cancer
  • Describe the role of the modalities used in the management of primary liver cancer
  • Describe the role of the nurse for patients with primary liver cancer

Course Syllabus

This course consists of two self-directed eLearning modules and a case quiz.
