The de Souza Gerontology Study Group offers preparatory work to assist independent adult learners as they study to write the CNA Gerontology exam. Participants will have access to a text book (eBook) and examine theories and concepts in order to achieve specific competencies as outlined in the CNA exam study guide blueprint. Based on this blueprint, the exam content consists of competencies of a fully competent practicing gerontology nurse (RN and RPN/LPN). 

Overview:

The de Souza Gerontology Study Group offers preparatory work to assist independent adult learners as they study to write the CNA Gerontology exam. Participants will have access to a text book (eBook) and examine theories and concepts in order to achieve specific competencies as outlined in the CNA exam study guide blueprint. Based on this blueprint, the exam content consists of competencies of a fully competent practicing gerontology nurse (RN and RPN/LPN). 

The course is self-directed and self-paced. It has been divided up into modules based on the CNA Gerontology competencies. The CNA competency categories are as follows:

  • Culture and human diversity
  • Assessment
  • Health promotion and risk reduction
  • Illness and disease management
  • Ethical, legal and health system issues
  • Professional practice
  • Information and health technologies

Course Syllabus

Course Objectives

  • Provide learners with a comprehensive study group based on the CNA Gerontology (RN and RPN/LPN) Exam Blueprints to support their preparation to write the national certification exam.

Course Requirements

  • At least 3 hours learning each week completing recommended readings, developing study notes and reviewing posted content on the eLearning system
  • At least 1 hours per week completing tests/quizzes
  • Unit readings 
  • Learner's goal should be to complete 2 units per week 
  • Optional: attend half day live workshop/symposium

When: The study group begins on February 24, 2025 and runs until May 19, 2025. The half day symposium via Zoom will take place on a date and time to be determined.  The CNA Gerontology Exam is written annually in the spring and fall. Eligibility

Registered Nurses who register with CNA for the annual specialty exam

Credits: Participating in this study group does not count as a de Souza Designation course credit. It is however, a requirement to obtain a CNA certification in to achieve the Designation of de Souza Nurse or de Souza APN.
