Patient Teaching for Oral Chemotherapy and Biotherapy (PTCB00ODM18)

With more and more oral chemotherapy and biotherapies being developed, cancer therapies are moving from intravenous infusions in outpatient clinics to oral medications taken in the patient's home. However, there are significant safety and adherence issues when a patient is taking oral anti-cancer drugs in their home. The MASCC Oral Agent Teaching Tool (MOATT©) was designed by the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) to help healthcare providers consistently assess and educate patients who are taking oral agents to treat their cancer.

This 5 learning hour online course developed in collaboration with Cancer Care Ontario will not only introduce health care professionals to the MOATT© but will also cover safe handling precautions when administering and caring for patients receiving oral anti-cancer drugs. The course will describe using the MOATT© with the following three oral anti-cancer drugs as examples: capecitabine (Xeloda®), erlotinib (Tarceva®), and imatinib (Gleevec®).

Course Syllabus

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the four parts of the MOATT© tool for assessing and educating patients about their oral anti-cancer medications
  • Use the 8 drug-specific patient teaching topics in the MOATT© for capecitabine (Xeloda®), erlotinib (Tarceva®), and imatinib (Gleevec®).
  • Explain the indications, mechanisms of action, administration recommendations, and side effects of capecitabine (Xeloda®), erlotinib (Tarceva®), and imatinib (Gleevec®).
  • Describe how to apply effective patient teaching strategies to oral chemotherapy and biotherapy education.
  • Identify safe handling strategies for health care providers, patients, and caregivers to reduce their exposure to hazardous drugs

Course Requirements

To receive a certificate, participants must complete the following before the course completion date:

  1. Complete a baseline evaluation
  2. Complete all eLearning modules
  3. Complete a self-evaluated application exercise
  4. Complete a case study based exam
  5. Complete a post-course evaluation

Time Commitment: This is a self-paced course. Participants have 4 weeks to complete all the course requirements.  Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded a certificate for 5 learning hours.

Eligibility

Available to all regulated health care professionals working along the cancer care continuum. This course is open to participants with any level of experience: from novice to experts.
